Southaven is the third-largest city in Mississippi with roughly 57,500 people and a median household income around $76,000, and it is where our Monday and Tuesday routes live. Snowden Grove, Greenbrook, Cherry Tree, the streets off Getwell and Airways, the newer sections east of Church Road — those are the yards we drive past every day whether we are cutting them or not.

That matters more than it sounds. Route density is why we can hold a quarter-acre lot at $45–$65 in this city instead of pricing in twenty minutes of windshield time. If your street already has two Southbound stops on it, your yard prices at the bottom of the band.

What Southaven yards are actually like

Overwhelmingly quarter-acre subdivision lots, most of them Bermuda, most of them built on cleared clay subsoil in the 1990s and 2000s growth wave. A typical Southaven front yard is open, sunny and fast to mow, with the labor concentrated in the back: fence lines, an AC pad, a couple of tree rings, and a gate that may or may not clear a 60-inch deck.

The clay is the recurring problem. MSU Extension explains that heavy clay soils compact from ordinary traffic and mowing until there is not enough pore space for oxygen and water, leaving shallow roots that brown out fast in a July dry spell. In Southaven that usually shows up as a strip of turf along the driveway and the walk to the front door that thins every summer. The fix is core aeration during active growth — late spring through midsummer — and MSU is emphatic that you never fix clay by mixing sand into it, which produces something close to concrete.

Who else is working this city

Southaven is the most competitive city in our territory, and we would rather name it than pretend otherwise. Augusta Lawn Care runs a franchise location covering Southaven, Olive Branch and Horn Lake. Odyssey Lawn Care is a genuinely local outfit and the only competitor around here who puts a number on their homepage — “starting at $50 per cut.” Magnolia Mows covers the widest set of Mississippi-side cities of any small operator. Lawn Doctor of DeSoto County handles fertilization and weed control but does not mow.

The Southaven calendar

• Mid-March: pre-emergent window for crabgrass. MSU's regional guidance is specifically mid-March for North Mississippi, keyed to soil temperature hitting 55°F at one inch.
• Early-to-mid April: Bermuda greens up, mowing restarts, mulch goes down.
• Mid-May through September: weekly service. Bermuda produces 65–75% of its annual growth between mid-June and mid-August, and bi-weekly cannot keep up with that.
• Late spring to midsummer: core aeration for the clay.
• Early-to-mid November: first killing frost, dormancy, mowing billing stops.
